2009 Toyota Avensis Sedan and Wagon: New Image Gallery and Details

The Paris Motor Show will see the world debut of Toyota’s all-new European flagship model, the Avensis that will be available in both sedan and station-wagon variants. Following the initial release of a rear 3/4 shot, Toyota has now let out more images of the Avensis including the first photos of the interior and of the station-wagon model.

Designed, engineered and built in Europe, the third generation Avensis features a more distinct and crispier design than its predecessor. Notable styling elements include the BMW-like Hoffmeister kink, the high beltline and the somewhat ‘obtrusive’ design of the vehicle’s front-end. The interior styling on the other hand is more evolutionary as it echoes that of the current Avensis. -Continued

While Toyota hasn’t released any specific technical details, Carscoop’s sources report that the new Avensis will be offered with three new petrol engines that are not only more powerful but also more frugal and less polluting than the outgoing units. Specifically, the Avensis’ petrol engine range will comprise a 1.6-liter unit delivering 132 HP, a 1.8-liter engine with 147 HP and a 2.0-liter unit with 152 HP. The diesel engine range has remained unchanged and it includes a 2.0-liter D-4D with 126 HP and a 2.2-liter D-4D available with outputs of 156 and 177 HP.

According to Toyota, the Avensis will also feature new safety specifications such as Steeringassist Vehicle Stability Control (VSC+), Adaptive Front Light System (AFS) and Pre-Crash Safety System (PCS).

As we told you last Friday, Toyota will perform the global debut of its new D-Segment sedan, the 2009 Avensis on 2 October at the Paris International Motor show. The new Avensis is the third generation of the model to be built at Toyota’s Burnaston plant in Derbyshire, UK. The Japanese automaker has yet to reveal any specific information on its new European sedan, but Toyota did say that the 2009 Avensis will features a new range of engines that are both more powerful and emit less CO2. 2009 Toyota Avensis – First Official Image!

The first official photo of the next-generation Toyota Avensis has been leaked into the internet well before the mid-size sedan’s scheduled debut at the 2008 Paris International Motor Show on October 2. The Avensis, which you could call Toyota’s European equivalent of the American Camry (the two models share nothing in common), has been fully redesigned featuring a crispier and more dynamic styling than the outgoing model. We don’t have all the details in our hands yet, but in previous talks we had with Toyota Europe’s people, the new Avensis will get a new line-up of engines with lower consumption and reduced CO2 figures.

After the withdrawal of the Camry from European markets in 2004 due to long-term poor sales, the Avensis became Toyota’s largest offering in the continent. The current, second-generation Avensis has been available in Europe since 2003 (having received a mild-facelift in 2006) competing against the likes of the Ford Mondeo, Peugeot 407 and VW Passat.

In the face of new competition, Toyota is planning to reveal a successor to the Avensis II that will be offered in both sedan and station-wagon variants towards the end of 2008 or early 2009. Now, whether or not the new Avensis will look like the car featured in this scanned rendering that was sent to us by one of our readers, your guess is as good as ours…
