Subaru Rear-Wheel Drive Coupe Concept

Subaru has released the first-ever teaser picture of its eagerly anticipated rear-wheel drive sports car concept ahead of its debut at the 2011 Geneva motor show on March 1. Even though Subaru's original ghost sketch of the car shows only a darkened outline of the front end, we managed to significantly brighten up the photo through some photoshop trickery and reveal the coupe's shape in full detail. At least from this picture, the Subaru study appears to differ in styling from its Toyota FT-86 sibling sporting a more curvy and less angular design.  

The Subaru variant will keep the same front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout as the FT-86, which will also be revealed in a more production ready form at the Geneva Salon. Power of course will be provided by Subaru's horizontally opposed boxer engine, but we'll have to wait until the Geneva Salon for more specific details.
On a side note, a couple of weeks ago the car was initially referred to as “Subaru Rear-Wheel Drive Sports Car Technology Concept”, but now, the Japanese automaker says it has changed the name to "BOXER Sports Car Architecture”.
The coupe concept will be joined in Geneva by the Impreza study that was first shown in LA last November and the Trezio, which is a re-badged version of the Toyota Verso-S mini MPV and will be offered in Europe with a 1.3-liter gasoline and 1.4-liter turbo diesel engine.

complained; Subaru listened. The WRX STI is a sedan again for 2011, and it just might be the best-handling STI we’ve ever tested.

When Subaru went hatch-only on the previous-generation STI, the company explained that the body style handled better, which had something to do with center of gravity, weight distribution, polar moments of inertia, and other such things. Perfectly rational explanations, and completely lost on the fans. You wanted a sedan with a wing big enough to pick up premium movie channels in Tokyo, and you got it. And it performs even better than the last STI hatch we tested.

 Not that it’s a completely fair comparison. Subaru didn’t just build a sedan version of the STI for 2011 and call it a day. As long as it was building a new model, Subaru let its engineers loose on the suspension to see if they couldn’t make up for that non-ideal body. We saw the first hints of that improvement in the 2010 Subaru WRX STI Special Edition we tested back in May, with its stiffer suspension lifted from the JDM-only Spec C model. Subaru hung onto those parts for the 2011 car, and even gave them another going-over.

 A lower ride height, even stiffer stabilizer bars on top of the already-stiffened springs, and new Heim joints on the front suspension conspire to turn out the best figure-eight performance of any factory-spec STI we’ve ever tested, the Special Edition included. Though the new sedan gave up a small amount of lateral grip (0.93 g average on the skid pad versus an all-time best of 0.95 g average for the 2008 model), it made big strides where it counted, on the figure eight. By testing transitions as well as pure lateral grip, the figure eight gives us a better impression of real-world handling, which the new STI has in spades. Completing the circuit in just 25.5 seconds at 0.73 g average, it’s quicker and stickier than both the last-generation STI and the STI Special Edition, which clocked in at 25.7 seconds at 0.71 g average. A quick look at our test data dating back to the original STI reveals that the only way you’re going to do better is with aftermarket parts.

Subaru has today unveiled the Japanese-market 2011 Subaru Forester tS.
Virtually identical to the Forester S-Edition concept unveiled by Subaru in Sydney earlier this month, the Forester tS offers a glimpse of what we might see in the carmaker's Australian line-up early next year.

The new Subaru Impreza WRX STI offered in two body styles (5-door and 4-door). In addition to the new styling, the 2011 WRX STI features significantly revised suspension tuning and lighter 18-inch wheels for even sharper handling. The Subaru Impreza WRX STI has been a recipient of continuous improvement since its introduction. In front, the 2011 WRX STI models feature sharpened bumper corners and wider, blacked-out fog lamp nacelles to accentuate the “wide and low” profile. A jutting lip spoiler with three-dimensional detailing emphasizes the cars’ sporty intent. The newly designed front grille with black base and blacked-out Subaru wing highlights the headlights’ shape to give the entire front end a more powerful appearance, accentuated by larger grille and bumper intake openings.

New standard 18-inch aluminum wheels feature high-luster paint and weigh 17.6 lbs. less than the previous standard wheels. The optional 18 x 8.5-in. BBS® forged aluminum-alloy wheels, which further reduce unsprung vehicle weight, are highlighted by silver high-luster paint for 2011.

Exclusive to the Subaru Impreza WRX STI, the Brembo Performance Brake System uses ventilated 4-wheel Super Sport anti-lock (ABS) disc brakes with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD). Super Sport ABS can control the braking forces at each rear wheel independently, which optimizes braking ability during hard cornering to help reduce understeer.

The 2011 WRX STI continues as the ultimate-performance Subaru with its high-boost 305-hp turbocharged/intercooled 4-cyl. Boxer engine and 6-speed manual transmission.
